France calls for credible international mediation to end Venezuela crisis

19 May 2017, 08:50 | Darin Griffith

Venezuelan opposition leader Henrique Capriles said he was barred from leaving the country Thursday as he planned to address a United Nations session in NY about the country's escalating violence.

Analysts say street protests are one of the few means the opposition has left to pressure Maduro.

Large-scale protests, caused by a complex economic situation and the confrontation between the parliament and the government, have been going on in Venezuela since April.

Police have fired tear gas and protesters have hurled rocks and Molotov cocktails in near-daily clashes.

Trump's comments came at a news conference following his meeting at the White House with Colombian counterpart Juan Manuel Santos where the two leaders discussed the "deteriorating situation in Venezuela".

The new designations by the U.S. Treasury Department would be the second round of sanctions that the Trump administration has imposed on high-level Venezuelan officials since taking office.

Ramirez stressed that Venezuela is not on the Security Council agenda and said many council members "disagree with the U.S." and back his government's position that it shouldn't be there. All of those targeted will have their assets frozen within U.S. jurisdiction, and American citizens will be barred from doing business with them, the Treasury Department said.

She earlier warned that Venezuela was "on the verge of humanitarian crisis".

"We will be working with Colombia and other countries on the Venezuela problem", Trump said.

Despite having the world's largest known oil reserves, Venezuela is facing a shortage of many basic items, including food and medicines.

The opposition has accused the government of violently repressing protests by Venezuelans demanding early elections to remove Maduro from power.

Mr Maduro accuses the country's business elite of boycotting the economy to create unrest and topple his democratically elected government. Three years ago, three months of anti-government demonstrations resulted in 43 people killed.

"It is not tolerable that these individuals, after they destroyed the country, and are responsible for the chaos that Venezuela is experiencing, seek to exonerate themselves", he said.

According to United Nations sources, poverty rates in Venezuela were nearing 60 percent before 1998, and by 2015 were halved to less than 30 percent in spite of an economic crisis triggered by falling oil prices.

He also suggested the anti-government protests that have convulsed the nation for six weeks are similar to the rallies presided over by Nazi leader Adolf Hitler in the 1930s. The Washington-based Organization of American States is holding a rare foreign ministers council session on the troubled South American nation later this month.
