Former US representative Anthony Weiner pleads guilty in sexting case

20 May 2017, 01:41 | Winston Chapman

The charge comes with a potential of up to 10 years in prison.

Anthony Weiner cried in court Friday morning while pleading guilty to sending lewd messages to a 15-year-old girl last year. Hillary Clinton's trusted aide filed an anonymous versus anonymous action in the Manhattan Supreme Court, according to the outlet, and is asking for the case to be sealed.

"I have a sickness, but I do not have an excuse", the ex-lawmaker said. He said he knew the texting was "as morally wrong as it was unlawful".

The charge he pleaded guilty to - transferring obscene material to a minor - carries a maximum sentence of 10 years.

The plea calls for a prison sentence between 21 and 27 months, though the sentencing judge is free to impose more or less time. He was then released on bail until his September 8 sentencing.

Wearing his wedding ring and a dark blue suit with a maroon tie, Weiner read from a prepared statement after U.S. District Judge Loretta A. Preska addressed him: "Tell me what you did, sir".

The win also marked Cleveland's 13th straight playoff win which tied the Los Angeles Lakers' 13 in a row way back in 1988-89. James has scored 30 points in eight straight games as he looks to visit the finals for the seventh-straight season.

Former FBI director Comey to testify publicly
White House Press Secretary Sean Spicer has not denied that this represents an accurate account of a part of that meeting. Comey is expected to speak before the committee after May 29 - the end of Congress's Memorial Day break.

Reports of the federal investigation surfaced in September after a British newspaper, The Daily Mail, reported that Weiner had engaged in an online relationship with the girl, which included explicit messages sent over social media and suggestive texts. He said Friday that he has apologized to the girl and has entered "intensive treatment" in the process of understanding the "depths of my sickness".

David Schaefer, a spokesman for the law firm Covington & Burling, whose attorney, Arlo Devlin-Brown, is representing Weiner, said the former congressman's lawyer will comment later Friday. Yet she agreed to be interviewed, with her father, "out of concern that Weiner may be sexting with other underage girls".

The incident prompted then-FBI director James Comey to state publicly - in the final weeks of the presidential campaign - that the closed investigation into Clinton's alleged mishandling of classified material was being reopened.

The inquiry was brief, and Mr Comey announced shortly before the election that the new emails contained nothing to change his view that Mrs Clinton could not be charged, but she partly blamed her election loss to Republican Donald Trump on Mr Comey's announcement. Despite his tarnished reputation, he ran for mayor of New York City in 2013.

The 52-year-old Democratic politician from NY, who resigned from Congress in 2011 over an earlier sexting scandal, will also have to register as a sex offender. The failed mayoral bid is the subject of the documentary Weiner.
