Donald Trump says looks forward to working with France's Macron

19 May 2017, 08:03 | Melvin Schneider

French voters elected centrist Emmanuel Macron as the country's youngest president ever on Sunday, delivering a resounding victory to the unabashedly pro-European former investment banker and strengthening France's place as a central pillar of the European Union.

Macron went up against far-right nationalist Marine Le Pen in the runoff round on Sunday, whose promise to lead France out of the eurozone had earned her a reputation as an investors' nightmare.

Macron is a keen advocate of the European Union and the euro currency, while Le Pen has proposed taking France out of both.

Jeddah - Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Salman congratulated Emmanuel Macron on his election as president of France.

Helen Lhuillier, a 73-year-old French Canadian who has lived in France for 40 years and attended his supporters' victory rally outside the Louvre museum, said she liked Macron's "policies and his personality, his enthusiasm".

Macron defeated the far-right leader Le Pen.Le Pen's decisive defeat, with an estimated 35 per cent votes, has put Trump in a slightly tricky spot after he had indicated support for her ahead of the first round of the polls.

Standing in line Sunday morning to enter the Macron press center, a Spanish journalist told me: "You'll see, even if Macron wins, we will all meet here again in four years, with Le Pen standing on the stage".

Macron doesn't come from a major political party.

A new name would help Le Pen distance herself from the old guard - including her father, party founder Jean-Marie, who was kicked out under his daughter's image revamping.

"A new page of our history has turned this evening, I want that page to be one of hope and refound trust, the renewal of our public life, will be at the base of what I do from the very first day of our presidency".

Ms. Merkel's spokesperson, Steffen Seibert, said the Chancellor is looking forward to working with the new president in the spirit of the traditionally close Franco-German friendship.

Whatever Le Pen's defeat means for populism's long-term future, Macron's victory can not disguise the fact that France remains a deeply-riven society on a number of issues and those divisions are not going to go away anytime soon. (Onwards!), barely a year ago. Macron has said he wants continued intelligence-sharing with the United States and cooperation at the United Nations and hopes to persuade Trump not to pull the US out of a global accord fighting climate change.

The government has also struggled to cope with immigration and integration, issues that drew throngs of supporters to Le Pen and her anti-migrant campaign.

She made it clear, however, that she now saw herself as the leader of the opposition.

Macron has said he was aiming for an absolute majority in the lower chamber in June's elections.

Another senior National Front senior official had said that if Macron wins, "France will have a submissive, by default president, not one that was really chosen".

President Xi Jinping congratulated Macron, saying their countries share a "responsibility toward peace and development in the world".

Le Pen stood on an anti-EU platform, calling for a Frexit referendum and a return to the franc.
