Despite Little Evidence Of Fraud, White House Plans To Launch Voting Commission

19 May 2017, 10:28 | Darin Griffith

Ahead of Trump's order, the officials said the commission would look at allegations of improper voting and fraudulent voter registration across the United States in last November's election.

He said that no one involved has spoken with him directly about whether the commission will investigate the president's unsubstantiated allegations of widespread voter fraud during the 2016 election, but he said he expected it to be on the agenda.

Kobach has been accused of extreme racism and having ties to white nationalists.

"Tellingly, the National Association of Secretaries of State, the bipartisan group that speaks for statewide elections administrators, learned about the president's executive order through press reports this morning".

The presidential commission is in addition to a voter fraud task force led by Vice President Mike Pence that Trump established in February to investigate balloting in the 2016 election.

Today's announcement is just another distraction from the real issues, and we expect that any findings or recommendations from this Commission will only be used to make it harder for people to vote in the future.

Though Kentucky does have a history of vote buying and coercion, there have not been documented cases of voter fraud - cases in which people have wrongfully registered to vote.

Mr Kobach advised Mr Trump's transition team and has been a leading GOP proponent of tighter voting regulations.

Old tweets about classified info from GOP and Trump resurfaces
In a pair of tweets Tuesday morning, Trump insisted he had the right to share information with Russian Federation related to terrorism and other issues.

23 meeting with top congressional leaders, the president claimed that between 3 million and 5 million undocumented immigrants illegally voted in November's election.

Mr Trump won the presidency with an Electoral College victory despite losing to Mrs Clinton by almost three million votes.

"And provide the president with a report that identifies system vulnerabilities that lead to improper registrations and voting".

In a House Intelligence Committee hearing on Russian election tampering in March, voter fraud became a topic of questioning - Committee Chairman Devin Nunes, R-Calif., asked Comey if the Federal Bureau of Investigation had any evidence that votes were changed in states like Pennsylvania, North Carolina, Florida, and OH, to which Comey answered "No".

Trump signed an executive order Thursday creating the Advisory Commission on Election Integrity.

It's unclear why Trump is launching the investigation now, almost six months after he made his initial voter fraud claim and more than three months since he said he'd launch the "major investigation".

"I think the concern that many people have would be that his prior statements about the so-called existence of voter fraud might color his view of the evidence that's going to be presented in the investigation, but I hope he puts all that aside", Johnson said.
