Chaffetz to resign, raising doubts about Trump probe

20 May 2017, 02:40 | Melvin Schneider

Chaffetz' dogged investigation of Democrat Hillary Clinton's emails from his committee chair over the last several years earned him acclaim from his party and helped him carve out a larger platform with frequent appearances on cable TV.

After Donald Trump won the election, Mr. Chaffetz became a lightning rod for criticism that Republicans were not aggressively policing President Trump.

According to GOP insiders, top legislators in the party are quietly asking Chaffetz to hand over leadership of the committee in light of the ongoing investigation into President Donald Trump and Russian Federation, which the congressman has reportedly been reluctant to step away from. Their concern: that Chaffetz might be using the high-profile Comey case, and an opportunity to grill the F.B.I. director in front of millions of Americans, to slingshot his way into a career as a top-tier cable news commentator. His committee subpoenaed Federal Bureau of Investigation records Wednesday, sparking speculation of a showdown with the White House.

According to the Daily Caller, three sources report Thursday that Rep. Jason Chaffetz (R-Utah) was expected to announce that he will step down from his seat, prematurely ending his term after eight years as a Utah representative, and chairman of the House Oversight Committee before his congressional term is up. Republican Rep. K. Michael Conaway is now overseeing that probe. His announcement came after he said last month he would not seek re-election in 2018 and was considering leaving his post before his current term ends.

Trump has long complicated Chaffetz's life.

Chaffetz said his last day will be June 30.

Chaffetz said Thursday in Utah that he hopes to find out from the U.S. Department of Justice within the next few weeks if they exist and if they'll share them with the House Oversight Committee he chairs.
