On average, more than 11,000 commuters ride their bikes to work each day, city officials say, and they are hoping for more during Friday's annual Bike to Work Day.

"The vast majority of us drive to work alone and, if we can somehow move the needle a little bit by getting people to take some other form of transit, we're really going to address not only congestion, but also clean air", he said.

Friday's event will feature coffee and healthy snacks and will be an opportunity for anyone to receive bicycling education.

Bike to Work Day is part of The League of American Bicyclists' National Bike Month, a nationwide effort to encourage folks to get active and include bicycles in their day-to-day transportation habits.

With the welcome return of warm weather, May is recognized as National Bike Month. "More people get to work on their bikes here than anywhere else in the state". From 2000 to 2013, bicycling commuting rates increased 105 percent in large bicycle friendly communities, increased 62 percent across the country and increased 31 percent in non-bicycling friendly communities.

More than a dozen bike train locations were designated for cyclists to ride from various starting points with the Indy Bike Hub YMCA as the destination.
