AT&T workers go on three-day strike

20 May 2017, 01:14 | Melvin Schneider

The telco estimates that the striking workers account for about 13 per cent of its total workforce.

Workers had issued an ultimatum, giving company executives until 3 p.m. ET on Friday to present serious proposals. Tens of thousands are expected to strike across the nation.

The CWA threatened the move could disrupt "a large number of retail stores" across the United States over the weekend. Highlighted in a new report produced by the CWA called "Offshoring Customer Service: How AT&T Lowers Standards for Workers and Consumers through its Global Race to the Bottom", the union claims the company has shed more than 12,000 in-house call center jobs since 2011.

Since 2011, AT&T has eliminated 12,000 call center jobs in the US, while contracting with third-party vendors operating in countries with low wages, the release states. In addition, 19,000 wireline workers and DirecTV technicians in California, Nevada and CT are preparing for a strike as well.

AT&T workers went on strike Friday in Philadelphia and other cities in Pennsylvania to protest the company's failure to negotiate in good faith a new contract.

AT&T has proposed to cut sick time and force long-time workers to pay hundreds of dollars more for basic healthcare, according to CWA.

"AT&T doesn't want to bargain with us, so we're taking a stand". The company has "a substantial contingency work force of well-trained managers and vendors in place", he said in an email, as well as the ability to reroute calls to unaffected call centers. "Coming around, asking, 'How many sales did you make?' They monitor every call, they nitpick every call that we take in there, and it's not a very good morale", said Sofia Simons, secretary for CWA Local 7110. "This is a warning to AT&T: there's only one way out of this now-a fair contract-and we'll settle for nothing less". "Even my son will be out there with me".
