Anthony Weiner To Plead Guilty To Sexting 15-Year-Old Girl

Anthony Weiner leaves federal court Friday in New York. Weiner pleaded guilty to a charge of transmitting sexual material to a minor and could get years in prison

David Schaefer, a spokesman for the law firm Covington & Burling, whose attorney, Arlo Devlin-Brown, is representing Weiner, said the former congressman's lawyer will comment later Friday.

According to reports, Weiner agreed not to appeal any sentence between 21 and 27 months in prison.

The plea deal appeared to seal the demise of a once-promising political career derailed by a series of scandals, stemming from what Weiner described in court as a compulsive need to seek sexual attention from women on social media.

ANTHONY WEINER: I'm here today to again apologize.

The federal investigation into Weiner came to light past year after the Daily Mail, a British newspaper, published an interview with the North Carolina teen.

The incident spilled over into the presidential race when investigators seized Weiner's laptop and found a cache of purportedly new emails that Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton sent to Abedin.

Isaiah Thomas named to All-NBA Second Team
Isaiah Thomas said he's talked with Markelle Fultz since Boston landed the first overall pick in Tuesday's draft lottery. Thomas and Fultz are both better with the ball in their hands, so there would be diminishing returns on the pairing.

In court, Weiner cried as he apologized to the teenager with whom he exchanged sexually explicit texts. The story claimed, "Anthony Weiner carried on a months-long online sexual relationship with a troubled 15-year-old girl telling her she made him "hard, ' asking her to dress up in 'school-girl" outfits and pressing her to engage in 'rape fantasies'".

Abedin announced her separation from Weiner in August 2016.

That same month, the FBI began investigating Weiner after the North Carolina girl told the news website DailyMail.com that she and Weiner had exchanged lewd messages for several months.

The latest Weiner scandal also ensnared then-Democratic candidate for president Hillary Clinton a year ago when a laptop searched by the Federal Bureau of Investigation that he and his now-estranged wife, longtime Hillary Clinton aide Huma Abedin, used turned up emails of interest to a probe of Clinton's use of a private email server during her time as secretary of state. Anthony would most likely end up as a registered sex offender. But Clinton, and others, have since said the scandal was partly the reason she lost the election to Donald Trump.

Weiner said he began getting mental health treatment in the fall, when he said he "came to grips for the first time with the depths of my sickness".

He ran for New York City mayor in 2013 and was leading several polls until it was revealed he had continued his questionable behavior.

The charge carries a potential sentence of up to 10 years in prison, but could involve no jail time depending on the determination of a judge.
