Anthony Weiner Pleads Guilty To Charge Over Sexting With A Minor

20 May 2017, 11:56 | Winston Chapman

Anthony Weiner, the disgraced former NY congressman and estranged husband of top Hillary Clinton aide Huma Abedin, tearfully admitted Friday to a federal judge that he sent obscene material to a 15-year-old high school student in North Carolina, the same day Abedin filed for divorce from him.

A law enforcement official said Weiner has agreed to plead guilty to a charge of transferring obscene material to a minor.

September 21: The DailyMail.com publishes an interview with a 15-year-old girl who claims she had sexually explicit online text and video exchanges with Weiner.

The charge carries up to 10 years in prison but prosecutors are calling for Weiner to be sentenced to between 21 and 27 months. "I have a sickness, but I do not have an excuse". She said that Weiner, then 51, carried out a monthslong sexually explicit conversation with her in which he asked her to undress and sent her semiclothed photos of himself.

"I had hit bottom", Weiner said. Weiner apologizes "for the personal mistakes I have made and the embarrassment I have caused".

Federal agents seized Weiner's laptop during the probe and discovered a batch of emails from his wife, Huma Abedin, a senior aide to Hillary Clinton, the Democratic nominee for president in 2016.

Weiner's attorney, Arlo Devlin-Brown, said in a statement that the former politician "accepted full responsibility for the inappropriate, sexually explicit communications he engaged in early previous year".

In a statement to CNN at the time of the first reports, Weiner neither confirmed or denied sending the texts.

Weiner and Abedin, a longtime aide to Hillary Clinton, have been married for almost 7 years.

Weiner, who lives in Manhattan and represented NY in Congress from 1999 to 2011, resigned after revelations that he was sending sexually explicit messages to multiple women.

The incident prompted then-FBI director James Comey to state publicly - in the final weeks of the presidential campaign - that the closed investigation into Clinton's alleged mishandling of classified material was being reopened.

Clinton's team blamed Comey's decision to release the documents ahead of the presidential voting as the reason for the Democrat's unexpected loss to President Donald Trump.

Weiner also claimed at the time that he was "likely" the subject of a hoax.

He ran for New York City mayor in 2013 and was leading several polls until it was revealed he had continued his questionable behavior. Abedin, who was not present at Friday's hearing, has filed for divorce from Weiner, a source familiar with the matter told CNN Friday.
