5 people hospitalized after eating gas station nacho cheese

The Sacramento resident who turned 33 on Wednesday is one of at least five confirmed cases of botulism involving people who had eaten at Valley Oak Food and Fuel in Walnut Grove

Five people have been hospitalized after eating nacho cheese from a Sacramento gas station, California officials said.

According to a news release by Sacramento County Health and Human Services, an investigation is now underway as several other people have been admitted to hospitals with food-borne botulism.

Officials have since taken the business' permit to sell food and drinks.

It's believed the cases involved people who ate at the Valley Oak Food and Fuel in Walnut Grove, Cal.

A woman is fighting for her life in the ICU while others are also hospitalized after consuming nacho cheese from a gas station in California. Within hours of eating the nacho-cheese sauce, she felt exhausted, her partner, Ricky Torres, told the Bee. The next day Kelly complained of double vision and later vomited and had difficultly breathing. She didn't go to the hospital until the next morning when she was having double vision and loss of motor control, and Sutter Medical Center actually sent her home a few hours later, according to the Sacramento Bee.

Her family drove her back to the emergency room, and the next day doctors hooked her up to a ventilation machine and admitted her to the intensive care unit. She says the illness caused her to lose her ability to keep her eyelids open.

In an interview with the Sacramento Bee, Kelly's partner, Ricky Torres, stated that he and members of Kelly's family do not understand how and why Kelly could have gotten so ill "over a bag of chips and nacho cheese". Really? How does that happen? Those who consumed prepared foods from Valley Oak Food and Fuel between April 23 and May 5 and are experiencing symptoms should contact their medical provider immediately. Most often, food-borne botulism is connected to home canning, when the canning process is done improperly.

"Only human mistakes create the environment for botulinum toxin to form", Clark said. 'We will use the lawsuit to learn more about the source of the food product that was contaminated.

The Kelly family has turned to a Seattle firm specializing in food safety issues to pursue legal action against the gas station. The source of the food product may be unrelated to the gas station; it could be a commercially made, pre-packaged item. Bruce Clark, the attorney working on Lavinia's lawsuit, commented on the case. "That's an essential question".
