21-year-old woman undergoes India's first uterus transplant

It took the doctors over four hours to retrieve the uterus from the mother through minimally invasive surgery, in a day-long procedure that went on until Thursday night, the report said.

The new surgical procedure has opened up another way to motherhood besides surrogacy or adoption for Indian women who do not have a uterus.

The third womb transplantation at GCLI will take place on a third woman who's suffering from cervical cancer, later. The condition of the recipient and donor is stable.

A 21-year-old woman from Solapur who was born without a uterus was successfully operated upon by a set of 12 surgeons in a Pune hospital, thereby marking India's first womb transplant case, reports said.

Once the donor conceives, she'll be able to deliver the baby through Caesarean section and has to take the immune-suppressants to prevent rejection of the uterus.

The woman, who suffers from congenital absence of uterus since birth, was fitted with her mother's womb so that she can conceive normally.

Motor mouth: T. rex could bite with the force of three cars
They came up with a model for T-rex, which took into account bite forces but also tooth pressure. This isn't the first time scientists have dedicated research to the T-Rex's powerful bite.

Dr Shailesh Puntambekar, who performed the surgery along with a team of 11 other doctors reportedly said, "The surgery has been successful".

The operations are meant to help women who want to conceive but can not because they were born without a uterus, suffered damage to it or had to have it removed.

All major transplantations - kidneys, liver, heart and lungs, to name a few - save lives or dramatically improve the health of the recipients.

Dr Mats Brännström, the head of the department of obstetrics and gynecology at Sweden's Sahlgrenska Academy under University of Gothenburg, said: "What is planned in Pune is a risky escapade of surgical cowboys wanting to be the first in their country and to get [worldwide] publicity and fame easy".

Only a handful of uterus transplants have been performed in the world and all the successful surgeries have been in Sweden.

The first two womb transplants are being done free although the cost of the procedure is around Rs7-8 lakh, according to the hospital.
