2 dead after tornadoes in Oklahoma, Wisconsin

20 May 2017, 12:57 | Winston Chapman

Two people were killed Tuesday, May 16, 2017- one in Wisconsin and another in Oklahoma - following tornadoes and severe storms that ripped through several states.

State officials activated the response Tuesday night when a tornado touched down in parts of Barron County.

"A lot of tornado damage" has been reported to the subdivision and surrounding rural area, with some homes and outbuildings damaged severely and utility poles and lines downed, said Beckham County Emergency Management Director Lonnie Risenhoover.

According to the National Weather Service, at least 3 tornadoes have been confirmed.

A mobile home park resident described the storm to WEAU-TV. A stand of trees just east of the trailer park was reduced to a clump of trunks, with hundreds of articles of clothing and pieces of insulation dangling from them like surrender flags.

"These will be slow-moving storms, so prolonged and repeating downpours will bring the potential for flooding", according to AccuWeather Senior Meteorologist Frank Strait. All other park residents had been accounted for as of 11:35 p.m. Tuesday. Entire subdivisions were lost and 25 people were injured. Some were treated and released while others were still receiving care Wednesday, Fitzgerald said.

The Barron County Sheriff identified the man as 46-year-old Eric Gavin. Others stayed at local motels or with family and friends.

Emergency crews are assessing the damage, but Fitzgerald estimates the damages to be in the millions.

Martin also told KSTP-TV that several turkey barns in the area were also hit hard. "It's heartwarming. Everybody wants to help". The county plans to open a volunteer reception center on Friday to coordinate cleanup efforts, officials said.

In Rusk County, the roof was blown of the town of Stubbs hall at the intersection of Hutchison and Amacoy Lake roads. He said he was not aware of any injuries in that touchdown.

"Severe storms are expected to develop this afternoon from the Mid Missouri Valley into Wisconsin", says the Storm Prediction Center in a weather outlook.

A deadly tornado struck just five States in the Central United States, causing destruction of infrastructure, injury and loss of life.

The tornadoes were part of a system of severe storms that rolled through the northern Chippewa Valley on Tuesday evening.

"Our rapid assessment teams were out as the storms were rolling late last night, and today we set up our mobile command unit", Porter said.
