What Are Snap Elections? What to Know Ahead of June 8

21 April 2017, 02:57 | Taylor George

British lawmakers have voted by a resounding 522 to 13 to back Prime Minister Theresa May's call for a national election on June 8.

"I think it is right now to ask the British people, to put their trust in me and the Conservative Party to deliver on their vote previous year a Brexit plan that will make a success for this country and deliver a stronger, fairer global Britain in the future".

"I believe that, at this moment of enormous national significance, there should be unity here in Westminster, not division", Mrs May told Parliament.

The opposition Labour Party and Liberal Democrats say they welcome the chance to put their policies to voters, though the Scottish National Party says the election call is a cynical ploy.

Philip Dunne, Owen Paterson, Daniel Kawczynski, Lucy Allan, Mark Pritchard, and Glyn Davies, all voted with the government to abandon the fixed-term parliament for 2015-20, and instead hold a general election on June 8.

He said: "I think it is the right thing to do and we need to get on with it".

While promising to run a "positive and optimistic campaign", she said the choice at the election was between her "strong and stable leadership" or a "coalition of chaos" led by Mr Corbyn.

"It's about asking the people to trust me, to trust us in government, to give us that mandate to go and get that really good deal", May told the BBC on Wednesday.

"The prime minister's attempt to dodge scrutiny shows how she holds the public in contempt", he said.

"She needs a strong majority in Parliament and this election will deliver that".

He added: "Winning an election will strengthen her position and it means there would be no cliff-edge with a general election hanging over her at the end of the negotiations".

"The political situation the country faces is unprecedented and risky".

The prime minister, who will make her first campaign stop in the north-west of England later, is hoping to significantly boost her current Commons majority of 17 to increase her authority, ahead of 18 months of talks which will determine the manner of the UK's exit from the EU.

And justifying her change of mind, she has argued a vote is needed as opposition parties were trying to "frustrate" Brexit.

Ms May formally notified the European Union on March 29 of Britain's intention to leave, and said she was confident of reaching a deal on the terms of withdrawal in the two years available. "That's what this is about, it's about asking the people to trust me, to trust us in government, to give us that mandate to go and get that really good deal for the United Kingdom".

"She looked across the despatch box and could not resist the political equivalent of taking candy from a baby", Tim Farron, leader of the Liberal Democrats, said in a debate in the Commons before the vote.

An early ballot will give the next leader more time to implement Brexit before another election.

The vote came after George Osborne announced that he intends to quit as an MP and after a Prime Minister's Questions session in which Mrs May and Jeremy Corbyn engaged in fiery clashes.
