Tillerson: Iran nuclear agreement fails to ensure non-nuclear Iran

21 April 2017, 01:55 | Taylor George

"The evidence is clear: Iran's provocative actions threaten the United States, the region and the world", he said.

In the redesign, the heavy water reactor will be reconfigured so it can not yield fissile plutonium usable in a nuclear bomb.

Ministry spokesman Lu Kang said the contracts for the plant's redesign would be signed on Sunday in Vienna with initial agreements having already been reached in Beijing, describing it as an important part of the Iran nuclear deal.

US Secretary of State Rex Tillerson has accused Iran of "alarming ongoing provocations" aimed at destabilising the Middle East and undermining America's interests in the region.

Tillerson said Wednesday the JCPOA "fails to achieve" the objective of non-nuclear Iran and "only delays" Tehran's goal of becoming a nuclear state.

The state department is obliged to inform Congress every 90 days about Iran's compliance with the deal.

Iran has yet to comment on the Trump administration's review, but Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Khamenei warned in November that Tehran would retaliate if the United States breached the agreement.

Former President Barack Obama would have agreed with all the charges: that Iran is a state sponsor of terrorism, that it supports proxies which undermine USA interests in the region, that it's hostile to Israel and that its ballistic missile tests challenge UN Security Council prohibitions.

Tillerson said one of the mistakes in the way the agreement was put together was that it ignored all the other serious threats Iran posed outside of its nuclear program.

During his presidential campaign, Trump called the nuclear agreement "the worst deal ever negotiated", raising questions over whether he would rip it up once he took office.

The secretary of state earlier acknowledged the Iranians had met the terms of the 2015 deal, but raised concerns about the country as a "state sponsor of terrorism".

But to critics, it is a sign that a presidential candidate who promised to rip up the nuclear pact with Iran is discovering that walking away from multilateral agreements is much more hard once in office.

The International Atomic Energy Agency has on multiple occasions verified Iran's adherence to its commitments under the JCPOA.
