Trump orders review of Iran nuke deal

Under review Secretary of State Rex Tillerson says the 2015 Iran nuclear deal will undergo a'full review- but for now the US is continuing to extend sanction relief

The remarks follow Tillerson's notification to Congress on Tuesday that the Trump administration has determined that Iran is complying with the Iran nuclear deal, which put curbs on Tehran's nuclear program in exchange for sanctions relief.

As CNN notes, if the USA were to reapply sanctions against Iran, it would go against the terms of the JCPOA.

"With this certification, President Trump must now uphold the United States' obligations and renew the sanctions waivers", said Trita Parsi, NIAC president.

Trump as a presidential candidate vowed to rip up the deal or renegotiate it, but hasn't said since taking office exactly how he'll proceed.

The nuclear deal was sealed in Vienna in July 2015 after 18 months of negotiations led by former secretary of state John Kerry and diplomats from the other four permanent members of the UN Security Council-Britain, China, France and Russia-and Germany.

In his letter to House Speaker Paul Ryan making the certification, Secretary of State Rex Tillerson wrote that the Trump administration was in the midst of an interagency review of the nuclear deal that will evaluate whether suspension of sanctions related to Iran under terms of the nuclear agreement "is vital to the national security interests of the United States".

"Unchecked Iran has the potential to travel the same path as North Korea and take the world along with it", he said.

The agreement between Iran and six world powers, negotiated during Barack Obama's presidency, placed limitations on Iran's nuclear program in exchange for lifting global oil and financial sanctions against Iran.

The NSC-led review will investigate whether lifting sanctions against the world's top sponsor of terror may not be in the US national interest.

Tillerson's emphasis on Iran's terror operation is "a first step, but we have to remain focused on the threat Tehran poses to America and our allies", the official said.

Asked if Trump was concerned that Iran might be cheating on the deal, Sean Spicer told reporters at a daily press briefing: "He's doing the prudent thing by asking for a review of the current deal". Tillerson said that decision will be made as part of a governmentwide review of Iran policy now under way.

The deal represents the same "failed approach of the past" that brought us to the threat of North Korea, he noted.
