Tesla Recalls 53000 Model S & X For Faulty Parking Brake

Tesla (TSLA) Issues Voluntary Recall of 53000 Cars

Tesla Model S, Model X Recalled for Electric Parking Brake Issue

The parking brake in question gets stuck because of a fractured internal gear. Affected will be around 53,000 cars which equates up to somewhere around half the total number of vehicles produced by the company in 2016.

The company announced the recall on its website, noting that a the issue "could prevent the parking brake from releasing".

The auto maker headed by Elon Musk expressed the opinion that the issues would not necessarily lead to a safety concern for drivers, nor has been a mishap or injuring relating to the issue.

Unfortunately for Tesla and owners of Model S and X vehicles built from February 2016 through October 2016, a manufacturing issue means that the parking brake may not function properly.

And White House press secretary Sean Spicer played along - either in the dark or as part of a ruse. White House officials said on Tuesday they were relying on guidance from the Defense Department.

Tesla said only a small percentage-less than 5 percent-of gears built during the period may have been manufactured improperly. The part is manufactured by third-party supplier Brembo. Although 53,000 vehicles are being recalled, the company said it believes five percent, and as low as two percent, of the vehicles are actually affected by the faulty gear. However, in order to be overly cautious, we are going to be proactively replacing these parts to ensure that no issues arise.

Tesla said it will soon contact owners of affected Tesla cars and inform them on how to have the parking brakes replaced.

Consumers allege their cars - purchased for $81,000 to $113,000 - veer off lanes while often "lurching, slamming on the brakes for no reason, and failing to slow or stop when approaching other vehicles" when Autopilot is activated. In the meantime, it is safe to continue regular use of your vehicle.
