Sharks ignite offense in 7-0 rout of Edmonton

20 April 2017, 11:56 | Marlene Myers

Joe Pavelski and Logan Couture each scored twice, and Brent Burns notched three assists in a 7-0 San Jose romp that evened its first round series with the Oilers at two games apiece.

After being throttled by the younger and faster Oilers in the past two games, the Sharks went back to the same successful formula that carried them to last year's Stanley Cup final. Pavelski scored on a pair of deflections, including one just 15 seco. "Guys just played comfortable (this time), played more of our style of game".

The Sharks can't keep up with the Oilers. The 37-year-old, who could be a free agent this summer, played 16:27 on Sunday after missing the final three games of the regular season and first two of this series with a knee injury. San Jose continued to apply pressure but couldn't even it up. Making their first playoff appearance in a decade, the Oilers have 20-year-old Art Ross Trophy victor Connor McDavid. Whether DeBoer makes any changes remains to be seen - I think he'll play his cards pretty close to the vest. In the two losses, the Sharks combined for just 39 shots. This marked the first time San Jose has been shut out in consecutive playoff games since Dallas did it in a second-round series.

"(But) you're not going to win killing 12 minutes a night no matter how good your penalty kill is.

The Sharks needed 15 seconds of the first period to take a 1-0 lead.

US Vice President Pence to North Korea: 'The sword stands ready'
North Korea's deputy ambassador to the United Nations reiterated on the weekend that the North is ready to respond to any USA missile or nuclear strike.

"Hopefully, when we get back to Rogers Place, the crowd can help them out a little bit and we can bounce back and take the series". Thornton has been skating in practice, and Sharks coach Peter DeBoer has said he expects Thornton to return at some point in the series. Marcus Sorensen potted a David Schlemko rebound at 9:46 for his first career playoff goal, and Couture got another at 12:52, converting on a wrist shot after a brilliant backhanded feed from the end wall by Jannik Hansen. And we haven't made them pay a price for that until tonight.

Now, the Oilers head back to Edmonton for the first game of what is now a best-of-three series on Thursday night.

"Every playoff game in my mind is a must win", said Couture. But after failing to put a shot on goal, Joel Ward tripped Oilers defenseman Andrej Sekera to cut the advantage 48 seconds short. San Jose earned a face-off in the Oiler zone after ten seconds.

Thornton started the game on a line with captain Joe Pavelski and Melker Karlsson as his wings. San Jose Sharks center Joe Pavelski (8) celebrates after scoring against the Edmonton Oilers during the second period in Game 4 of a first-round NHL hockey playoff series Tuesday, April 18, 2017, in San Jose, Calif. He almost created two goals on one shift, but no teammate was able to get to his wraparound attempt and then Jones stopped him on a one-timer. "In fact, I whispered in his ear that it was a promotion because his responsibility level had to go way up".

Edmonton played neither well nor smart, and lost its composure more and more as the wheels came off. Draisaitl was ejected with the Oilers trailing 5-0 in the second period after spearing Chris Tierney between the legs.
