Serena Williams confirms pregnancy

21 April 2017, 05:00 | Joan Schultz

The 23-time major champion will not play again in 2017 due to her pregnancy and plans to return in 2018.

Serena Williams has announced that she is pregnant, and while that is a wonderful development for her it will also have seismic impact on women's tennis.

The American sporting megastar is in a relationship with Reddit co-founder Alexis Ohanian.

Williams offered up a side profile shot of herself in a yellow swimsuit with a caption that read "20 weeks" in a Snapchat posting that disappeared quickly.

The 35-year-old collected her 23rd Grand Slam win of an unbelievable tennis career at this year's Australian Open that saw her surpass the Open era record set by Steffi Graf.

Serena's rep Kelly Bush Novak confirmed the news, writing in a statement: 'I'm happy to confirm Serena is expecting a baby this Fall'.

CNN has reached out to reps for Williams, Ohanian and the Women's Tennis Association for comment.

"Coming back after Daniel I had one of my best years ...(but) I was quite a few years younger (than Serena)", Court told Reuters in an interview on Thursday.

Tuchel: The Monaco goal destroyed our belief
The Germany international's influence for Dortmund is underlined by his 24 goals in 42 Champions League games. Dortmund's fans also sang "Hourrah, Hourrah, Monaco " (Hurray, Hurray Monaco ).

Germany's Angelique Kerber, the current world number one, also sent her regards to her rival.

She beat her sister Venus in the final 6-4, 6-4 to claim her seventh title at the Australian Open.

There is recent precedent for tennis players to return to action after becoming mothers. The WTA tour has been unpredictable this year but it will be interesting to see, who will be able to step up and win Grand Slam titles in Williams' absence.

For Williams, who commands almost $29 million in salary and sponsorship earnings, becoming pregnant makes her all the more attractive to corporate sponsors, industry executives said. "We didn't have that", she said. She has announced that she will return to the tour this summer.

The younger Williams sister has won 23 Grand Slams, is just one short of Margaret Court, who collected many of hers in an era when the difficulties of global travel often diluted the fields.

Wins over fellow top-10 players in Brisbane, Qatar and Indian Wells suggest the Czech has the appetite for the big occasion.

Williams, who has played professionally for two decades, first gained the No. 1 ranking in 2002 and has held that spot for more than six years in total.
