Sanders Urges Party to Go Beyond

Bernie Sanders Defends Campaigning For Anti-Abortion Rights Democrat

Despite beating Sen. Sanders' endorsement for chair of the DNC, Keith Ellison, Beus stated Democrats are still ready to unite behind the party. Bernie Sanders of Vermont gained roars of approval from a friendly crowd Monday night as he called for a radical transformation of the Democratic Party.

Sen. Bernie SandersBernie SandersSanders: I don't consider myself a Democrat Clinton campaign dogged by infighting, overconfidence Poll: Bernie Sanders country's most popular active politician MORE (I-Vt.) said Tuesday night that he still does not consider himself a Democrat, despite taking part in a Democratic National Committee unity tour with the party's new chair Tom Perez. Among Democratic primary voters alone, Sanders won a solid majority of support from voters ages 45 and younger.

The senator who ran unsuccessfully in last year's Democratic presidential primary brought up the USA military's ongoing presence in Afghanistan and Iraq, saying the U.S. could be "dragged into another war" to the detriment of domestic priorities.

The goal, Sanders said, was to transform the Democratic party "into a 50 state party, and a party which does not continue to ignore half of the states in our country including some of the poorest states in America". On health care, Sanders called for a "Medicare-for-all" approach, and Perez stopped short of endorsing that policy while saying he believed health care should be a right. Most are in their 30s or 40s.

The contrast was apparent throughout the university's Baxter Arena, where supporters waved signs featuring the familiar image of Sanders' white hair and glasses alongside Mello's jet black hair and sunglasses.

Some of the candidates Sanders has endorsed are direct products of the his campaign, such as Khalid Kamau, who was elected to the South Fulton, Georgia, City Council on Tuesday.

Sanders also criticized lawmakers for what he saw as a failure to sufficiently help James Thompson, a civil rights lawyer and veteran, in last week's special election when he ran for the Kansas U.S. House seat vacated by Central Intelligence Agency chief Mike Pompeo. The DNC should be discouraging primaries such as the one in Virginia where the Lt. Governor Ralph Northam who has won statewide and has announced for governor is being challenging in a primary by Tom Perriello, a one-term congressman who has never run statewide.

He often focused on income inequality during his campaign for the Democratic presidential nomination previous year. And then Democrat James Thompson only just narrowly lost. Congressional Democrats said they were considering legislation that would prevent similar problems.
