Pro-Life Group Endorses Karen Handel in Georgia Congressional Runoff

21 April 2017, 01:46 | Melvin Schneider

"We want everybody who is supportive of Republicans, so absolutely", Handel told The Associated Press after taking a congratulatory call from Trump on Wednesday. "It is now Hollywood vs. Georgia on June 20th", Trump tweeted.

DUNWOODY, Ga. (AP) - A narrow miss by a Democratic newcomer in a conservative Georgia House district has triggered a high-stakes runoff that could test President Donald Trump's influence and the limits of the backlash against him.

Ossoff and Handel will now compete in a runoff on June 20.

Actor Samuel L. Jackson recorded a 45-second radio ad endorsing Ossoff that ran for several days before the election.

The close contest had prompted Mr Trump to take to Twitter to urge Republicans to vote.

In comparison, Handel reportedly raised just $463,000. Republicans have controlled the seat for decades, but Trump only won it by 1 percentage point in last November's presidential election.

President Trump is weighing in on the 6th Congressional District race.

During that incident, parliament was bombed and Erdogan narrowly escaped assassination. He also said that some voters had been unable to cast their votes in private.

But among Democrats, there is optimism that Ossoff's campaign may provide a blueprint for future races, with midterm elections coming up next year.

Ms Handel received a little over 19 per cent of the vote on Tuesday.

An Ossoff win would not tip the balance of power in Washington, where Republicans control the White House and both chambers of Congress.

"BIG "R" win with runoff in Georgia".

Handel does need the president's backing, Bullock said. If she can't, then Ossoff has a chance of winning in June. "They said that their goal was to get over 50 percent. They came up short", Spicer said. GOP Rep. Tom Cole of Oklahoma, an ally of House leadership, said congressional Republicans must start showing they can lead after the failure of their health care legislation, or risk voters snatching away their majorities. Mr Spicer said Mr Trump could campaign for her "if needed".

"We are changing the world and your voices are going to ring out across this state and country", Ossoff told his supporters.

Another congressional battle will play out late next month in conservative-leaning Montana, where voters will pick a replacement for Republican Ryan Zinke, who has become Trump's U.S. interior secretary.
