Despite President Trump's optimism that China will use its "extraordinary levers" to pressure North Korea, there have been questions about whether Beijing is serious about working with the U.S.to hinder dictator Kim Jong Un from developing the country's nuclear program.

Mr Pence said: "We will not rest and will not relent until we obtain the objective of a denuclearised Korean Peninsula".

Pence's visit came amid increasing tensions and heated rhetoric on the Korean Peninsula.

The trip so far has been dominated by US and allies' concerns about North Korea's nuclear and missile development efforts.

Speaking aboard the USS Ronald Reagan at the Yokosuka Naval Base in Japan Wednesday, Pence reiterated the U.S. and its allies were prepared to respond to potential North Korean attack with "overwhelming" force. "We are with you 100 percent".

The Trump administration is to review and reform the U.S. trade deal with South Korea, Mike Pence said on Tuesday, citing a widening bilateral trade deficit and obstacles for American businesses in the east Asian nation.

A State Department official said Monday that the United States will continue trying to further isolate North Korea economically, politically and diplomatically.

From two continents, top Trump administration officials warned Tuesday that North Korea's latest failed missile launch was a reckless act of provocation and assured allies in Asia that the United States was ready to work to achieve a peaceful de-nuclearization of the Korean Peninsula.

Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi pledged support for dialogue between the two nations. "President Trump has made it clear the US will pursue an America first policy in trade and exchange".
