Patriots' Alan Branch skips White House visit over Trump's sexist remarks

21 April 2017, 01:07 | Melvin Schneider

Despite the fact that Spencer's narrative was essentially debunked by the statistics noted by Dr. Lapchick, the Politico writer maintained that the Patriots are still both an NFL and a political football, because as the Pats prepared for their visit to the White House, "the politics of the moment will be impossible to miss".

It is traditional for US championship sports teams in any sport to meet and greet the president (whoever that might be at the time) at the White House.

A tweet and a story from the New York Times strongly suggested that the number was far less this year than when the Patriots visited President Barack Obama in 2015.

The White House celebrations were overshadowed by the suicide of the Patriots former star Aaron Hernandez, who hanged himself on Wednesday in a prison cell where he was serving a life sentence for murder, prison officials said. But turnout for Wednesday's event appeared to be lower than for a previous Patriots visit in 2015. The 2015 photo included more than 40 support staff members, who were seated on the lawn this year, the team said.

The sports media, which the writers themselves admit has become a very liberal profession, continue to celebrate athletes for boycotting the Trump White House or stating in advance that they would do so.

Notable by his absence was Tom Brady, the Super Bowl MVP and President Trump's longtime pal who released a last-minute statement that he was unable to attend because of unspecified family reasons.

With the Patriots lined up behind him, Trump said: "No team has been this good for this long". The number of players not attending because of the president, and vocally doing so, is unprecedented. But Brady also declined to attend 2015.

Six other Patriots had announced they wouldn't attend the event for political reasons.

Alan Branch initially told reporters he would be staying to spend time with his family, but revealed to the Boston Globehe chose to stay because of sexist remarks made in the past by the president.

Other Patriots welcomed the visit, including owner Robert Kraft, a friend of Trump's who contributed $1 million to the president's inauguration committee.

James said that one reason substantially fewer players showed up this time as compared to 2015 was that some veteran players did not see the need to go twice in three years.

"Every time we've had the privilege of going to the White House, a dozen of our players don't go", Kraft told the "Today" show.
