Burning Incense Left Unattended Caused Blaze Where Firefighter Died: FDNY

A NY city firefighter died Thursday afternoon after falling five stories from a burning Queens apartment building, Mayor Bill de Blasio said at an emotional press conference. He was also a husband and the father of an 8-year-old girl.

The fire was brought under control in less than an hour.

A firefighter has died while battling a two-alarm fire in Ridgewood, the NYPD said Thursday.

The firefighter was apparently moving from an FDNY bucket to the roof when he took a misstep and fell, according to the eyewitness.

More than 100 firefighters responded to the second-story fire near Wyckoff Avenue which broke out about 2:30 p.m., a fire department spokeswoman said. Tolley fell from the roof about 20 minutes later.

"It was a routine operation, and somehow he fell from the roof", said Nigro at a grim hospital news conference.

For witnesses the shock of seeing this was followed by the realization that the firefighter was in grave condition. "That door was open".

Officials say the unidentified firefighter was pronounced dead at Wyckoff Heights Medical Center. Both were visibly shaken while updating the press on Thursday evening.

Fellow firefighters at the scene were overcome with grief. "A man dedicated to protecting others gave his life for this city".

As CBS2's Tracee Carrasco reported, de Blasio and Nigro met with Tolley's wife at the hospital.

"Our hearts go out as well to all members of the FDNY who are feeling the loss deeply right now, especially the members of Ladder 135 Engine 286 in Ridgewood, where William was stationed", de Blasio said.

Tolley is the 1,147th firefighter in the history of the FDNY to die in the line of duty.
