Japan says it must remain on alert over looming North Korea threat

21 April 2017, 12:47 | Taylor George

"The bottom line is that North Korea has an improving nuclear weapons arsenal", said David Albright, the institute's president.

Secretary of Defense Jim Mattis issued a brief statement Saturday evening on behalf of President Donald Trump, who was at Mar-a-Lago, his Florida resort.

"The president has no further comment".

U.S. Pacific Command said the ballistic missile, of a kind not yet determined, was launched from near a submarine base at Sinpo, a port city on North Korea's east coast.

That plea fell on deaf ears in North Korea.

Weapons analysts said they believed some of the missiles on display at the military parade were new types of intercontinental ballistic missiles (ICBM).

One of Kim's top spokespeople, Choe Ryong Hae, today vowed North Korea would "beat down enemies with the power of nuclear justice". The country under his watch has been aggressively pursuing a goal of putting a nuclear warhead on an ICBM capable of reaching the continental United States.

North Korea shows its strength as missiles are paraded.

Japan's foreign minister says his country needs to remain on alert over North Korea even after this weekend's celebrations.

"We will respond to an all-out war with an all-out war and a nuclear war with our style of a nuclear attack", Choe said during the parade in the North Korean capital of Pyongyang, which was also attended by Kim Jong Un.

Ostensibly the event was to mark the 105th anniversary of the birth of Kim's grandfather, the North's founder Kim Il-Sung - a date known as the "Day of the Sun" in the Democratic People's Republic of Korea, the country's official name.

Trump signals out need to fight Canadian dairy policies
The senators' letter further details that the action is leaving farmers with hard decisions about the future of their farms. Dick Kimball, Chautauqua County Farm Bureau president, said Canada's actions won't impact local milk.

The extended-range Scud missile in that earlier launch suffered an in-flight failure and fell into the sea off North Korea's east coast, according to US imagery and assessments.

"I don't think a strategy that relies on pressuring North Korea to give up its nuclear weapons is going to work", he told Fox News.

"We've tried persuasion, it's failed, we've tried coercion, it's failed".

The regime under North Korean leader Kim Jong-un must not engage in any more provocative action that aggravates the situation.

In a statement on official news agency KCNA, the North's Korean People's Army said Mr Trump had "entered the path of open threat and blackmail against the DPRK".

Kim, wearing a suit and tie, was greeted Saturday with thunderous — and extensively practiced — applause as he stepped into view on a large podium, clapping to acknowledge the thousands of soldiers and civilians taking part in the parade at Kim Il Sung Square.

The rockets carried on articulated trailers appeared to be longer than the North's existing KN-08 or KN-14 missiles, analysts said.

A North Korean missile "blew up nearly immediately" on its test launch on Sunday, the U.S. Pacific Command said, hours before U.S. Vice President Mike Pence was due in the South for talks on the North's increasingly defiant arms programme. The South Korean government believed Kim Won-hong had been sent to a "political re-education" prison camp for sending false reports to Kim Jong-un. Under his watch, North Korea has aggressively pursued a goal of putting a nuclear warhead on an ICBM capable of reaching the U.S. mainland. Recent satellite imagery suggests the country could conduct another underground nuclear test at any time.

The fact is that, since North Korea began developing nuclear weapons for its own survival, the situation on the Korean Peninsula and in Northeast Asia have become much more unsafe, and hopes of peaceful co-existence have decreased.

But war was a central topic of North Korea's celebrations, as missiles were rolled out on trucks and tanks, rocket launchers and artillery guns were paraded in plain sight.
