Standing in front of a packed arena and whilst being watched by millions around the world, Zuckerberg explained how Facebook is making the camera the first augmented reality platform. Spaces now makes extensive use of the Rift's Touch Controller, but actually requires very little movement - users are mostly standing around at a virtual table, browsing and sharing media while they chat with each other. If things get a bit out of hand, however, users can put the experience on pause, which puts their avatar in a separate, quiet space.

The three categories of the augmented reality content are; overlaying information, adding virtual objects and enhancing real objects.

He described the previous rollout of camera functionality across all of Facebook's apps as "act one".

Facebook Spaces beta is now available for Oculus Rift + Touch but Facebook has plans to expand to other virtual reality platforms in the future. After picking the one you want, you can customize it by changing your eye color, hairstyle and other features.

During the event, Zuckerberg also unveiled new augmented technology the company is working on, that again uses the Facebook camera - called the Camera Effects Platform.
