Donald Trump Said He Was Sending An 'Armada' To North Korea

21 April 2017, 01:14 | Melvin Schneider

"Trump, (Vice President Mike) Pence and (Secretary of Defense James) Mattis all used this to raise tension and pressure North Korea".

As tensions between North Korea and the United States rose last week, the U.S. Pacific Command announced that it was deploying an aircraft carrier to sail from Singapore to the Korean Peninsula in a dramatic show of force.

More than a week earlier, on April 8, the U.S. Navy announced that a strike group led by the USS Carl Vinson had been diverted north from Singapore to the Western Pacific as speculation mounted that North Korea was preparing a nuclear or missile test.

Trump and other officials made the remarks about the strike group's dispatch to Korea amid fears that the North could carry out its sixth nuclear test to mark the birthday of national founder Kim Il-sung, grandfather of current leader Kim Jong-un, which fell on Saturday.

He added that the presence of tens of thousands of USA personnel in South Korea and Japan "gives me great confidence that the United States presence in the Asian Pacific is strong, and under President Trump's leadership it will be stronger still".

US Defense officials now say the Vinson group's deployment has been extended 30 days, and the it will be in place, near Korea, next week.

Officials announced the deployment about two weeks ago, with President Trump hyping the deployment of the "armada" to North Korea, suggesting that the deployment was a major show of force, and fueling worldwide concern that the USA is about to attack.

Russian Federation ties may be at an all-time low, admits Donald Trump
It came days after Chinese leader Xi Jinping held his first meeting with President Donald Trump at a summit in Florida last week. The FBI is probing whether Trump's staff engaged in criminal collusion with Russian officials to boost Trump's election chances.

So according to Spicer, because the ultimate destination of the Carl Vinson is, in fact, the Korean Peninsula, it didn't matter that the White House did not clarify that the aircraft carrier would not arrive there until later on in the month. It is headed to the Korean peninsula.

"The Ministry is in the process of checking facts with both the U.S. and China through various diplomatic channels", the ministry's spokesperson Cho June-hyuck said.

This counters the U.S. Pacific Command's announcement that it was approaching waters near the Korean Peninsula. News reports said Japan was planning to deploy its own destroyers to form up with the Carl Vinson and its USA escorts, the destroyers USS Wayne E. Meyer and Michael Murphy and the cruiser USS Lake Champlain. "That's a fact", he told a skeptical press corps during his daily briefing on Wednesday, arguing that, in the broadest sense, the president's statement was accurate because the ships would eventually get to the waters between North Korea and Japan.

The next day, the U.S.

His words came after the North held a show of military might in a parade over the weekend and tested another missile on Sunday, which blew up nearly immediately after launch, the Pentagon said.

On April 15, the US Navy published a photo showing the Vinson transiting the Sunda Strait on its way to drills with Australia, while news outlets reported on April 11 that the movement would take more than a week.

"If you threaten them and your threat is not credible, it's only going to undermine whatever your policy toward them is", he said.
