BC candidates highlight health care, economy as election continues

21 April 2017, 12:55 | Taylor George

- Carole James, the NDP's finance critic, dismissed the Liberal accusations on its platform as "fearmongering".

Liberal leader Christy Clark brushed off questions about the tactic, directing reporters to speak with her party. Assuming BC Housing contributes 50%, at $250,000 per unit, the Liberals estimate the cost to the provincial government in government debt would be $4.7 billion just in the first four years.

Horgan has promised to eliminate tolls, replacing the revenues for three years by using Clark's "fake prosperity fund" that took increasing MSP revenue and called it liquefied natural gas revenues. "All five of them have withstood scrutiny from the auditor general".

"You're not going to deliver it until those kids have their driver's licence", Clark replied, warning of the problems encountered when Quebec introduced universal daycare.

The analysis does not include the NDP's revenue assumptions or 40 additional uncosted promises, de Jong said in a statement.

He said the NDP "commitment" to freeze B.C. Hydro rates and ICBC premiums for four years will cost a combined $3.2 billion.

His party's position on budgeting is now in stark contrast to that of the B.C. Liberals, which have made "controlling government spending" one of the three main planks of its own election platform (the other two being cutting taxes and creating jobs).

The Trump Administration's H-1B Visa Changes Are Creating Uncertainty Among Employers
The executive order aims to shift the visa program from a lottery system to targeting jobs with a high need for skilled workers. Trump has long pledged to support American goods and workers, but his own business record is mixed.

It's a strategy reminiscent of the one that brought former BC Liberal leader Gordon Wilson success back in 1991 - when Social Credit leader Rita Johnson duked it out with BC NDP leader Mike Harcourt.

"If the B.C. Liberals want to hire people to drive around in a truck following me, at least they gave someone a job", Horgan told reporters. "They want to talk about the future", she added. Clark suggested Horgan plans to side with the B.C. Government Employees' Union and retail pot through liquor stores.

Horgan also announced an expanded apprenticeship and trades training program to help fill the 96,000 jobs that would be created through new school, hospital, highway and home construction.

John Horgan, leader of the NDP says he'll send it to the BC Utilities Commission for an economic review.

NDP Leader John Horgan campaigned Wednesday at the University of British Columbia in Vancouver, where he promoted his plan to eliminate interest on student loans and offer a $1,000 completion grant to people who finish their studies.

"We tabled a fully costed platform last week based on the numbers the ministry of finance tabled in February", said Horgan. Here's a closer look at BC Hydro rates under the BC Liberals and what the effects might be to reining them in.

Horgan said the difference in this election is that as leader, he's crisscrossing the province talking to voters about affordability, services they can count on and a sustainable economy with good jobs and better wages.
