Aaron Hernandez Found With Bible Passage Written on Forehead in Blood

21 April 2017, 01:34 | Joan Schultz

Former NFL star Aaron Hernandez hanged himself in his prison cell early Wednesday while serving a life sentence for murder, authorities said. "He was brought to UMass-Memorial Health Alliance Hospital in Leominster where he was pronounced dead about an hour later".

Serving a life sentence for the 2013 murder of Odin Lloyd, many found it odd that the ex-Patriot would commit suicide in the middle of his appeal, and the legalities of his death may end up costing the Patriots and the National Football League a lot of money.

Hernandez was in a single cell in a general population housing unit when he was found hanging from a bed sheet that he had attached to his cell window, according to officials. "Mr. Hernandez also attempted to block his door from the inside by jamming the door with various items".

The Department of Corrections said state police would be conducting an investigation and they spent the day gathering evidence from the cell, reviewing surveillance video and speaking with prison staff.

Hernandez was at the Souza Baranowski Correctional Center in Shirley, Mass, at the time of his death.

Last Friday, Hernandez was acquitted in the deadly 2012 drive-by shootings of Daniel de Abreu and Safiro Furtado in Boston.

His death was "a shocking and sad end to a very tragic series of events that has negatively impacted a number of families", said Bristol County District Attorney Thomas Quinn, who prosecuted Hernandez in the Lloyd case. Hernandez was convicted of an unlawful gun possession charge.

"Absolutely no chance he took his own life", tweeted Hernandez's former agent, Athletes First president Brian Murphy.

Hernandez is survived by numerous relatives, including his fiancee, Shayanna Jenkins-Hernandez, and his 4-year-old daughter. While his death has originally been seen as a suicide, there are those that believe it may have been murder since it made no sense for him to take his own life.

But when the Patriots returned to the playoffs the next season, Hernandez was unable to even watch on television while he was in prison awaiting trial in one shooting and already a suspect in another.
