The US also boycotted Monday's session saying the regular review showed the council's "long-standing bias against Israel", which threatens the "credibility" of the body.

In 2009, President Barack Obama applied for membership, hoping it could help change the council.

The US held a council seat for six of Obama's eight years.

Citing the council's anti-Israel bias, the U.S. has chose to boycott the meeting and intends to vote against any decision that may be reached.

The US State Department criticised the United Nations council on Monday for holding its Israel debate and vowed in a statement "to vote against every resolution put forth under this agenda item".

The United States will vote against every resolution by the council regarding Israel, the department announced.

The council's targeting of Israel has decreased in recent years, according to a 2017 report by the Council on Foreign Relations.

The council has always been criticized as one of the U.N.'s most anti-Israel bodies. Israel is the only country targeted with a dedicated rights council agenda item.

The Trump administration will boycott a session of the UN Human Rights Council over concerns about the organization's anti-Israel agenda, the Washington Free Beacon reports.

Trump administration officials told the Free Beacon that the increased pressure on the U.N.is part of an organized effort by U.S. Ambassador Nikki Haley, who hopes to reform the global organization and eliminate its perceived anti-Israel bias. "We've wasted enough time and money on it".

Moving forward, the Trump White House has said it intends to vote against every United Nations resolution that negatively impacts Israel and will encourage other countries to do the same.

Israeli Ambassador to the U.N. Danny Danon also blasted the UNHRC.

"The U.N. has been Israel-bashing for decades and what we are trying to do is make sure they understand that there's a new administration in town and we're not going to put up with it", she said in an interview with Fox News's "America's Newsroom" Friday.

"There's been a series of requests coming from the secretary of state's office that suggests that he is questioning the value of the US belonging to the Human Rights Council", a former State Department official told Politico.
