United Kingdom to Trigger Brexit on March 29, May's Spokesman Says

20 March 2017, 07:33 | Winston Chapman

LONDON, March 20 Sterling fell by around half a cent from a three-week high against the dollar on Monday, after a spokesman for British Prime Minister Theresa May said she would formally launch talks on leaving the European Union on March 29.

Brexit minister David Davis has said there would be no sudden drop in numbers, as it would take years to fill low-skilled jobs in hospitality, social care and agriculture now done by immigrants.

Once Tusk has received the letter, the Polish politician will then consult the other 27 leaders of the Council on the Brexit trigger.

The 10 Downing Street office of Prime Minister Theresa May said that she will make a statement in the House of Commons on the day Article 50 is triggered. Leaders of the 27 other European Union nations will meet by the month of May to finalize their negotiating guidelines.

A spokesman said: "There's not going to be one".

But EU negotiators warn it could take two years just to settle the divorce terms; agreeing on a new relationship for the United Kingdom and the EU could take years longer.

May's tour started in Wales, and will be followed by visits to Scotland and Northern Ireland.

Last week Scottish First Minister Nicola Sturgeon said that she plans to push for a second Scottish referendum, despite May saying it was not the right time.

Amid fears of the impact on jobs and growth of leaving the single market, May is pushing for "maximum possible access" for British companies.

While May says "no deal for Britain is better than a bad deal for Britain", quitting the bloc without a pact or more time to negotiate one would leave the country exposed to World Trade Organization tariffs, putting duties of around 10 percent on vehicle exports alone.

Brexit will take a substantial toll on Britain's parliament and government departments, according to a report by the Institute for Government (IfG) published Monday.

The EU said it was ready to begin the negotiations and within 48 hours of the trigger on March 29, Tusk will send the other 27 member states his draft negotiating guidelines, which means that talks could start in May.

This is an extremely unrealistic timetable to conclude such complicated negotiations; in reality, because of the time taken at the beginning and end of the process to wind up and wind down the negotiations, the actual time negotiating will probably be 15 months at best.
