Snap General Election Ruled Out By Downing Street

According to unnamed sources in the Times, the Conservative Party chairman and its chief whip met during the weekend to debate a run to the ballot box as early as May 4 - the day of several local elections across the country.

Some MPs believe Mrs May could announce an early election next week when she triggers Article 50, beginning the Brexit process.

"There would be little benefit from fighting the referendum again by proxy in a General Election, where the polling shows the pro Brexit Conservative party is likely to win".

ICM director Martin Boon said the current 19-point lead had only been topped by the Conservatives on three occasions in the 34-year history of its polls for The Guardian - twice in 1983 when Labour was led by left-winger Michael Foot and once in 2008, when Gordon Brown was reeling from the impact of the financial crisis.

"It would be very hard not to [support a snap election] because if the government wants to dissolve Parliament, wants a general election, we don't want the Tories to be in government, we want to be in government", he said.

"We have been clear that there's not going to be an early general election and the Prime Minister is getting on with delivering the will of the British people". We are taking on additional staff. The Greens could expect four per cent support, down one. "The temptation to go now to establish a very large majority for the Tory party will be massive for her".

"I have seen nothing in the last week to suggest a wobble in her position", a senior source told i.

When asked why the Prime Minister did not wish to seek her own mandate to lead the United Kingdom, he replied: "There's a Fixed Term Parliament Act". On Monday, Ladbrokes put the odds at 5/1 for a snap election on 4 May, with odds for one this year at 2/1. "Politics is not a game my arse", wrote a Twitter user named Pete Clarke, referring to the recent announcement by Scottish First Minister Nicola Sturgeon that she would seek a new independence referendum.

However, the prime minister's official spokesman was unequivocal this morning in ruling out an early election, stating: "It is not going to happen".
