Sesame Street debuts autistic muppet

20 March 2017, 11:11 | Winston Chapman

Now, however, she will appear as a muppet and featured star on TV for the first time. She is invited to play a game with fellow muppets Oscar, Abby and Grover, where they must point out different shapes. For a while, she used to do therapeutic work for the ones that suffered from this. I bought her books about autism and tried to emphasize the positives, but all of the main characters in the books were boys. The muppets in Washington do not like the muppets of PBS, a channel they see as an overly-expensive luxury favoured by the coastal elite. As the saying goes, "If you've met one person with autism, you've met one person with autism".

Now, the new character of Julia is providing a healthy approach to explaining how some differences in communication and reaction is not something to shy away from.

"This is a significant step in improving public understanding of autism, and making people on the autism spectrum feel more accepted", Mark Lever, CEO of the National Autistic Society told WIRED.

Sesame Street is to introduce a new character with autism in a bid to "reduce the stigma" attached to the condition. Starting out as an educational show for children in the 1960s, it has deftly switched between ABCs and 123s and teaching about issues such as race and death. Until now, that is.

Meet Julia, the newest cast member on the long-running children's show "Sesame Street".

Like my daughter, Julia loves animals and art. She expresses herself through her pictures, and she can be hesitant to join in the group. He's sad and anxious that Julia doesn't like him, but Elmo explains that Julia has autism so she "does things a little differently". "It's just that Julia has autism".

New leak shows Galaxy S8 is smaller than S7 Edge

What's ahead for the Neil Gorsuch confirmation hearings
Why is this such a battle? There are nine justices and they are generally viewed as either liberal or conservative. How has Gorsuch prepared for the hearing? The first was whether Mr Gorsuch would be too close to Mr Trump.

In 1972, the New Yorker described the show as "the most intelligent and important program on television". But even that curiosity can be hard for my daughter to handle sometimes. Muppet creator Rollie Krewson explained, "When she gets upset, she flaps her hands, so she has two separate sets of arms". "Well, so obviously, they had learned", she says.

"And she has autism", the website adds.

Here are some videos of Julia to watch with your kids. Sometimes, in the case of shows with whiny little protagonists like Caillou, that's not always a good thing.

Stacy Gordon, who plays Julia on screen, has been thinking of one such child in particular, her son, who is on the autism spectrum.

On "60 Minutes", Julia doesn't respond when Stahl greets her. Maybe Julia will help them be more tolerant and less judgmental.

The team was also mindful that the character of Julia was not a "one size fits all".
