Russia Summons Israeli Envoy Over Concern About Air Strikes In Syria

Since Russian forces began operating in Syria in 2015, there have been a number of airstrikes that foreign media have attributed to Israel.

Last week Syria's army high command said Israeli jets had breached Syrian air space and attacked a military target near Palmyra, in what it described as an act of aggression that aided Islamic State. "On this there will be no compromise", Lieberman said Sunday.

He also claimed that when the civil war began in Syria in 2011, opposition militia groups sabotaged the anti-aircraft defense systems belonging to President Bashar Assad's regime, giving Israel freedom to operate.

One missile was intercepted by Israel's Arrow air defense system.

"Every time we identify a transfer like this, we will work to prevent the transfer of game-changing weapons".

The IDF, in turn, said on Friday that it used the advanced Arrow missile defense system to shoot down a Syrian anti-aircraft missile that was sacked at an Israeli jet.

During the meeting, President al-Assad talked about the latest developments in Syria and responded to the delegation's queries regarding the situation of the Syrian people after six years of war. Gen. Herzi Halevy, their military intelligence chief, publicly declared that Israel does not want to see ISIS defeated in the war, and prefers ISIS over the Assad government. It marked the first time Israel had used the Arrow missile, which has been jointly developed with the USA over years to defend against long-range missiles from Iran.

Assad's position has been strengthened in recent months with his forces reclaiming the whole of Syria's second city Aleppo, as well as enjoying continuing Russian support.

"We need to ask: Will Russia accept the continuation of Israeli activity in Syria, or will it decide to put an end to it?" he said.

A "hotline" has been set up between the two countries, but Katz said Russian Federation is not notified in advance of an Israeli strike.
