Rep. Schiff previews Federal Bureau of Investigation director's House hearing on Russian Federation probe

On Sunday, the top Democrat on the intel committee, Rep. Adam Schiff (D-California) claimed, contrary to Clapper, that there is evidence of collusion. He added that "if you take the president literally, it didn't happen".

"Because it is an open, ongoing investigation and is classified, I can not say more about what we are doing and whose conduct we are examining", Comey said.

He added that Trump "should admit he was wrong, stop the outlandish tweets".

The President has defiantly refused to back down from his explosive claim that Barack Obama wiretapped his phones. He says courts grant this permission after a rigorous application process.

Comey testified that the investigation has been going on since last July.

Testifying at a highly politically charged congressional hearing in the House, both said they had no evidence that any vote tallies were changed in Michigan, Pennsylvania, Wisconsin, Florida, North Carolina or Ohio.

Mr Rogers said that his agency is working to provide congress with the material it needs to investigate the intelligence agencies' findings.

The extraordinary revelation, and the first public confirmation of an investigation that began last summer, came at the outset of Comey's opening statement in a congressional hearing examining Russian meddling and possible connections between Moscow and Trump's campaign.

Typically, the FBI does not discuss or even confirm the existence of ongoing investigations.

Comey says the probe is part of the FBI's counter-intelligence mission.

Though Comey would not discuss specific evidence, he went far beyond his testimony from a hearing in January, when he refused to confirm or deny the existence of any investigation exploring possible connections between Trump associates and Russian Federation, consistent with the FBI's longstanding policy of not publicly discussing its work.

He said the panel was investigating whether other names were leaked.

The top two representatives on the committee said documents the Justice Department and Federal Bureau of Investigation delivered late last week offered no evidence that the Obama administration had wiretapped Trump Tower, the president's New York City headquarters.

"The committee has seen no evidence to date that officials for any campaign conspired with Russian agents".

He declined to say when the investigation might concluded.

Nunes says he hopes the committee's hearings will result in a "definitive report" on Russia's involvement in the presidential election.

President Trump denied Monday that he colluded with Russian Federation during the presidential election - calling the allegations "made up" by Democrats and "FAKE NEWS".

"The Democrats made up and pushed the Russian story as an excuse for running a awful campaign. Big advantage in Electoral College & lost!"

He also disputed allegations that British intelligence services were involved in the wiretapping.

National Security Agency director Michael Rogers later told the committee that the intelligence community stands behind its January assessment that it is highly confident Russian Federation interfered in the 2016 election with the goal of electing Mr Trump.

"The one crime we know that's been committed is that one: the leaking of someone's name.", Mr Nunes told Fox News. Trump tweeted early Monday as news coverage on the Russian Federation allegations dominated the morning's cable news. "But it is also possible, maybe more than possible, that they are not coincidental, not disconnected and not unrelated, and that the Russians used the same techniques to corrupt US persons that they have employed in Europe and elsewhere". They're not likely to hear dissent from committee members on that score.
