Prioritise law and order, Adityanath tells police chief

A five-time MP from the BJP, Adityanath is a popular leader known for his fiery Hindu rhetoric who has stirred controversies over his polarising and inflammatory speeches against Muslims - who form almost 20 percent of the state's population.

Television footage late on Saturday showed cheering BJP workers in the state capital, Lucknow, giving garlands and candies to the MP, who was sworn in on Sunday.

His appointment - undoubtedly approved by Mr Modi - has surprised analysts, given the prime minister's careful rhetorical emphasis on development and economic growth rather than on religion.

Since 1998, when the five-time MP joined politics, not a single Assembly election has passed in the state without him arm-twisting the BJP into handing tickets to his henchmen and admirers.

The party of India's prime minister, Narendra Modi, runs on a religious nationalist platform, arguing the country's identity and culture are inherently Hindu in character.

One of the two chief ministers is Keshav Maurya, the BJP's state president for UP, who has a background in the Sangh Parivar's ultra-hard line and sometime violent Vishwa Hindu Parishad as well as the RSS.

"In Uttar Pradesh, it does not matter if it is the SP or the BJP in power". The leader has also asked his party members to avoid making controversial statements and execute the promises made by the party. Modi did raise anti-Pakistan sentiments by referring to "surgical strikes" across the LoC and threats to stop the flow of water in the initial stage of election campaign, but his anti-Pakistan rhetoric didn't work.

The 44-year-old Adityanath asked the police chief to order the police force to be on the alert and also chalk out an action plan for better policing in a bid to rein in crime within a fortnight.

Yogi Adityanath on Monday met top officials of the state and distributed party manifesto for execution.

Taking a dig at the Opposition, he said they are not able to digest the massive mandate given to the BJP.

"Many people who voted for the BJP in these elections also have reservations about this chief minister", Mr Verma said. With the BJP leadership often springing a surprise with its choice of state leaders like Manohar Lal Khattar in Haryana, Vijay Rupani in Gujarat and now Trivendra Singh Rawat in Uttarakhand, sources have said that a relatively lesser known leader can not be ruled out.
