If you're poor in the US, Trump's budget is not for you

20 Марта 2017, 01:08 | Melvin Schneider

Eliminated: International climate change programs run by the State Department and the EPA would end, including payments the US had pledged to make to United Nations climate efforts.

The Trump administration proposed sweeping cuts to many parts of the federal government on Thursday morning, including foreign aid, environmental protection, trade development, the arts and programs geared at helping the poor.

"This budget proposal has nothing to do with draining the swamp and everything to do with hurting regular Americans", National Treasury Employees Union President Tony Reardon said in a statement.

The $1.1 trillion budget outline proposes a $54 billion increase in defense spending, paid for through cuts to non-defense spending at the State Department, the Department of Housing and Urban Development, the EPA, along with the elimination of other federal programs. "We're not spending money on that anymore", Mulvaney said during a press briefing Thursday. According to Pew Research, older voters preferred Trump over Hillary Clinton in the 2016 election and it appears that this cut will hit them the most.

"Until OMB releases the full FY 2018 Budget", the memo says, "all public comments of any sort should be limited to the information contained in the Budget Blueprint chapter for your agency". NIH funds medical research, including about 300,000 scientists at universities. Budget cuts also could delay the long-deferred Gateway rail tunnel.

Budget Director Mick Mulvaney stated broadly that the budget was meant to defund areas of the Government that had been deemed wasteful or ineffective in the interest of being better stewards of taxpayer dollars. Together, the cuts to climate change initiatives at the agency would eliminate some $100 million in spending. Obama oversaw larger military budgets than former president George W. Bush in all but two years of his presidency, but in the post-fact presidency of Trump, that doesn't matter. "Not since early in President Reagan's first term have more tax dollars been saved and more government inefficiency and waste been targeted".

Another loser of "America First" seems to be people living in poverty. "The administration's proposed budget will be akin to taking away the Agency's bread and water". The budget states that the cut is based on the programs lacking "strong evidence of meeting its objectives, such as improving student achievement".

Since cooperating with Trump on any issue would be political suicide for Democratic senators, it would be even more remarkable if they endorsed his massive cuts to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), the Department of Agriculture, and the Department of Labor.
