Of the 16 teams, 6 conference champions will receive automatic qualification with the remaining best 10 teams being selected on an at-large basis.

The Notre Dame men's hockey team is headed back to the NCAA Tournament for the second year in a row. Ohio State lost in the semifinals of the Big Ten Tournament to Wisconsin over the weekend, 2-1. Minnesota-Duluth (25-6-7) is the No. 2 overall seed and leads the West Regional field in Fargo, N.D., while Harvard (26-5-2) was designated the No. 3 overall seed and is the favorite in the East Regional at Providence, R.I. The championship playoff format involves four predetermined regional sites with four teams assigned to each site. Don Lucia's club will square off against the Notre Dame Fighting Irish (Lucia's alma mater) in the opening round of the tournament.

With the Gophers having the last No. 1 seed, they'll arguably have the toughest road to the Frozen Four.

The team is also 1-0 in the NCAA Tournament as the Maroon & Gold defeated Notre Dame 5-2 in the 2004 at an NCAA regional.
