Egg balancing at Spring Equinox

Egg balancing at Spring Equinox

Monday is the vernal equinox, the starting point of spring, as determined by people who base their seasons on the Earth's position relative to the sun and stars.

When the Northern Hemisphere has the vernal equinox, the Southern Hemisphere gets the autumnal equinox because that part of the Earth is tilted away from the sun.

The equinox marks the date when the daytime and nighttime are essentially even. Susan Harvey and friends will be up at the Clock Tower at noon, testing the theory that this is the day eggs can be balanced on their ends. However, today is only the first day of the astronomical spring.

While the Equinox is considered a pretty uneventful occurrence, in Kenya it is significant to the rain patterns - according to Mr Samuel Mwangi, the deputy director of the Kenya Meteorological Department. You can see from the chart below, depending on where you live on the planet, the day on which you have equal day and night shifts on the calendar. So, you're most likely to feel the urge to go forth and procreate, or at least practice for it, in the winter and spring. This year, the first of these two occurrences happens at 6:29 a.m Eastern Standard Time on March 20.

AS THE days begin to get slightly longer, many of us will be wondering when we can finally call it spring.

J. Denny Weaver: Ryan's health care bill reveals his values
That left Senate GOP leaders at least two votes shy of what they'd need to prevail in the chamber, which they control 52-48. Ryan said Sunday that the bill still must go before the House Rules Committee before a final vote.

Good question. It's always in March, usually on the 20th, but can occur on the 19th or 21st because our rotation around the earth isn't exactly 365 days. The latter is known as autumnal equinox or fall equinox. The second reason is that the sun's rays bend just a big as they enter the Earth's atmosphere. Your clarity won't last, though, as the direction of the sun will shift as the season progresses. People practise this tradition to celebrate the coming of spring.

It's hardly surprising that spring festivals were taking place thousands of years before Christianity evolved. Is there any truth to this? No!

This is my favourite thing to do on this day. You can do that any day, as long as you have lots and lots of patience.

Enjoy the magical vernal equinox!
