'A legend just left the building': Entertainment world reacts to Chuck Berry's death

- According to the St. Charles County Police Department, legendary musician Chuck Berry has died.

Born in St. Louis in 1926, Berry enjoyed a long career of over six decades, having released 19 studio albums between 1957 and 1979, and toured extensively throughout his career.

Rock and roll's original bad boy, Berry was still in high school when he was convicted of armed robbery and locked up for three years until his release in 1947 at the age of 21. Berry was one of the most popular and influential performers of rock "n" roll music, starting in the 1950s, and some of his most popular songs are "Johnny B. Goode" and "My Ding-a-Ling". "Hail! Rock "n" Roll," chronicling two 1986 concerts celebrating Chuck Berry's 60th birthday, was surprised by how hard the "Johnnie B. Goode" singer really was.

Police in St Charles County, outside St Louis, said they were called to Berry's home by a caretaker and found him unresponsive. "The Berry family asks that you respect their privacy during this hard time". "All of us in rock have now lost our father", he tweeted.

Berry's hits were covered by the Rolling Stones, the Beatles, the Beach Boys and many more and members of all those bands posted messages on Twitter expressing their sadness. "When I was 10 years old and I dreamed every night of moving to America, Chuck Berry played the soundtrack".

Nikky Sixx, of Mötley Crüe, said "Without him Rock n Roll wouldn't be what it came to be" and Keith Urban, the country singer, wrote: "RIP Chuck Berry!".

"The first time I ever sang in a talent competition, in the mid-'70s sometime, it was this song", said Jon Bon Jovi while introducing "Johnny B. Goode". He was a true pioneer of rock "n" roll & a massive influence.

But Berry was sharply dressed in a sparkling red shirt and his trademark sailing cap, and when he closed with "Johnny B. Goode", more than a dozen women gleefully joined him onstage and the almost-full house gave him a standing ovation, and he did his famous duck-walk off the stage.

Chuck Berry's death came just weeks before the debut single off his first new studio album in almost four decades was scheduled to go on sale, a friend of the rock "n" roll legend said.

John Lennon once suggested rock "n" roll be renamed "Chuck Berry".

He was 90 years old. But within a few years, he shared the credit with Berry at Berry's music publisher's request.
