Brazil meat-packing giants 'exported rotten beef'

20 March 2017, 04:12 | Melvin Schneider

Allegations have surfaced in Brazil that meat processors in the country have been selling rotten beef and poultry products.

Among the accused are JBS, the world's largest beef exporter, and BRF, the biggest poultry producer. China and the US have also requested explanations, O Estado de S. Paulo newspaper reported, without saying how it obtained the information.

The country's federal police, similar to the FBI in the United States, said raids on some of the largest meat producers uncovered some 30 instances of bribes being paid to officials.

It may be recalled that Brazil is the largest red meat exporter in the world.

Temer set up the meeting following inquiries from the European Union and China over the scandal. Wal-Mart said in a statement that it has requested explanations from the suppliers cited by the police, and that its internal procedures on food safety are reliable. Americans consume about $200 billion of meat annually, the bulk of it from domestic sources, according to the North American Meat Institute. "In some cases, the products used were carcinogenic", the police said. It was alleged that some of the meat, including sausages and cold cuts, was adulterated with ingredients including pig heads, and that suspect smells were masked by applying acid. Only 33 of more than 11,000 inspectors, he added, are being investigated.

China wary of U.S. talk about `all options' for North Korea
The test of a new high-thrust rocket engine was hailed as a "great leap forward" by North Korea, state media reported Sunday. The US alleges that these tests have been carried out in violation of the UN Security Council resolution.

The Agriculture Ministry said the scandal affects the country's reputations as meat trader. They said there was also evidence that some of the meat was destined for markets in Italy and Spain.

Food giants JBS SA and BRF SA are spending big in a rush to reassure consumers their meat is safe to eat after finding themselves at the center of Brazil's latest corruption probe.

JBS said: "The company vehemently repudiates any adoption of practices related to the adulteration of products".

The investigation and any potential repercussion on business come at a bad time for the companies.

JBS shares tumbled 10% on Friday, while BRF fell 7%. The printed version of that ad - which has been plastered across newspapers, in addition to the daily ones featuring a juicy stake and a smiling Brazilian actor - is also the first result that comes up in Google searches for the company's name.
