Ghana: Accident at popular Kintampo waterfalls kills 20 students

Ghana National Fire Service spokesman Prince Billy Anaglate said that 18 people died at the scene and two others died in hospital - but the overall death toll remains unclear.

People deal with the aftermath of the tragedy at Ghana's Kintampo Waterfall.

They were among a number of others who were swimming in the waterfalls when a heavy storm uprooted some trees, which fell on them during a downpour.

The broadcaster said rescue teams used chainsaws to cut through the fallen tree and free those trapped underneath.

A further 20 people were being treated in hospital, Desmond Owusu Boampong, a local police commander, told newsmen.

An eyewitness told Starr News that most of the students belonged to Wenchi Senior High School in Ghana.

Following up with a second post, he added: "My deepest condolences to the families of all those affected by this unfortunate and tragic incident".
