'Toxicity Charge' to start in central London from October

17 February 2017, 05:24 | Marlene Myers

Drivers of some of the oldest and most polluting vehicles will face an extra £10 charge for entering central London.

"That is why today, on the 14th anniversary of the start of the congestion charge, I've confirmed we are pressing ahead with the toughest emission standard of any major city, coming to our streets from October 23rd". He is also instructing Transport for London to look at the costs and implications of a scrappage scheme for the most polluting diesel vehicles, but stresses that any such measure would have to be introduced nationwide by the Government in Westminster.

City Hall said its research showed people living in London's most deprived communities, often by busy roads, are on average exposed to 25% higher levels of harmful NO2 pollution.

The charge, also known as the Emissions Surcharge, will apply to motorists who own vehicles that do not meet Euro 4 standards - typically those diesel and petrol vehicles registered before 2006.

Days after the European Commission issued a "final warning" to Britain and four other countries to address breaches of nitrogen dioxide pollution limits, London mayor Sadiq Khan on Friday announced a new £10 charge to deal with the crisis in the metropolis.

Most Recent analysts Ratings: Activision Blizzard, Inc. (NASDAQ:ATVI)
BlackRock Institutional Trust Company N.A. raised its position in Activision Blizzard by 20.3% in the third quarter. Following the sale, the director now directly owns 279,783 shares of the company's stock, valued at $12,791,678.76.

This means anyone in a pre-Euro 4 vehicle driving (roughly) further north than Vauxhall, further east than Paddington, further south than Islington and further west than Whitechapel will have to stump up a total of £21.50 for each day they drive in the zone, which operates between the hours of 7am and 6pm, Monday to Friday.

In total, more than 37 stakeholders and organisations - including numerous councils, Global Action Plan and the Licensed Taxi Drivers Association - support the principle of the T-Charge, which uses cameras as monitoring and enforcement measures. But the latest research shows that these diesel vehicles are now responsible for nearly 40% of all NO2 emissions in the UK's major cities.

The charge will be introduced in October this year, and will operate in addition to the standard Congestion Charge, which runs from Monday to Friday between the hours of 7:00 a.m. and 6:00 p.m.

Khan is proposing to introduce the Ultra-Low Emissions Zone a year earlier than planned in 2019, and extend it beyond central London from 2020 onwards to the North and South Circular. We are pleased the Mayor has prioritised improving air quality.
