Keystone XL Pipeline Proposal Reawakened With Nebraska Application

Cunha defends the company against those who label it a foreign entity, stating TransCanada has been operating in Nebraska since the 1980s and that half of its employee based, roughly 4,500 employees, work across the United States on its oil pipeline and natural gas pipeline projects.

When U.S. President Donald Trump took office last month, he said TransCanada was welcome to resubmit an application to build the pipeline.

TransCanada says it has refiled an application in Nebraska seeking approval for the Keystone XL pipeline route through the state, a hotbed of opposition to the project. Late previous year the Canadian government approved two other major export pipelines: Kinder Morgan's Trans Mountain expansion and Enbridge Inc's Line 3 replacement project.

Company officials stressed that the proposed route has already been evaluated by the Nebraska Department of Environmental Quality and approved by the governor in 2013, noting that the preferred route avoids the state's Sandhills area and "is expected to have minimal environmental impacts". "The thousands of Nebraskans we have met over the last eight years understand the value of this project and what it means to the state".

Although Trump is more receptive to the Keystone XL, however, the president has said there may be an across-the-border tax that could affect Canadian oil exports to the US, the FP reported. Girling pledged to make safety and environmental concerns the project's top priority.

The $8 billion dollar pipeline would carry crude from the oil sands of western Canada to refineries along the Gulf Coast in Texas.

The Commission has 210 days from receipt of an application to enter an order approving or denying the application.

It must now be reviewed and endorsed by the Nebraska Public Service Commission as part of the approval process.

A Nebraska Supreme Court decision in 2015 ruled in support of the pipeline, but a number of Nebraskan landowners filed suits against TransCanada alleging the project violated the state's constitution.

However, opponents to the Keystone XL pipeline have said the claims by TransCanada and those of the supporters of the pipeline are disingenuous.
