James Beard Award semifinalists: 6 Arizona chefs, restaurants nominated for 2017 awards


The James Beard Foundation on Wednesday announced its Restaurant and Chef Award semifinalists for this year's 27th annual James Beard Foundation Awards, and one Lawrence baker is on the list.

Wisconsin natives listed in other categories include Phillip Foss of EL Ideas in Chicago, for best chef: Great Lakes, and Alex Seidel, a semifinalist for best chef: Southwest, this time for his second restaurant, Mercantile, in Denver. Winners of the 2017 James Beard Media Awards, honoring the nation's top cookbook authors, culinary broadcast producers and hosts, and food journalists, will be announced on April 25. He was a semifinalist for the same award past year, and follows in the footsteps of St. George's founder Jörg Rupf, who received four James Beard nominations.

In San Antonio, the Esquire Tavern made it into the Outstanding Bar Program contest.

Justin Severino of Cure and Morcilla is among the Best Chef semifinalists for the fifth time. Christensen won the James Beard Award for Best Chef: Southeast in 2014 for her work at Poole's Diner in downtown Raleigh. He is well-known among Indy foodies thanks to his contributions at chefs dinners in the city over the past few years.

"I'm proud for the whole staff - our whole restaurant has been working so hard over the past year", he notes, adding that Redzikowski and Mackinnon-Patterson have both brought national attention to Boulder with Oak at Fourteenth and Frasca, respectively.

Foodies make pilgrimages across the country to check out restaurants that are James Beard Award winners.

Next up was Dallas with two national nods: Flora Street Cafe for Outstanding New Restaurant (the chef is Stephan Pyles) and Maggie Huff of FT33 for Outstanding Pastry Chef.
