Popular social media influencer Rahul Raj had this to say about the unnatural phenomenon: "Fire, smoke, garbage and pollution around Bellandur Lake in Bengaluru".

A part of Bellandur Lake, which is the largest lake of the city, caught fire on Thursday evening after the debris close to the lake were set on fire. The blaze is not just restricted to the lake but that reached the Iblur flyover and Sun City as well. Locals alleged that debris dumped into the lake and the lakes's bank along with garbage was set ablaze illegally by miscreants that led to the massive fire.

There is hardly any water left in the lake has no water while a lot of weed is grown along with sewage and debris that are accumulated in the lake. An ambulance had been called in as a precautionary measure when the fire erupted around 5:50 pm on Thursday. In 2015, the same lake caught fire twice in three days.

Bellandur and Varthur are the two major lakes in Bengaluru.

The sorry state of Bengaluru's water bodies makes headlines every few months, usually when the chemical froth from one of its many polluted lakes spills on to the roads, inconveniencing office-goers, or when the effluents burst into flames. "We want to fence the lake, but the Urban DC has to first survey the water body and remove encroachments", he said.

Since the fire took place at the lake, even the fire department found itself in a tricky situation. "The Bengaluru Development Authority had taken up the initiative to restore the lake in January this year but so far no work had started", the ward officer said.

The froth had formed due to chemical deposits from detergents and cleaners, which had flown into the lake from the sewage pipes.
