Are States One Step Closer to De-Funding Planned Parenthood?

17 February 2017, 01:23 | Winifred Adams

"Abortion is not healthcare", Rep. Tim Walberg (R-Mich.) said during Tuesday's hearing by the House Rules Committee on the resolution's passage, adding, "The federal government should not incentivize the practice by undermining the authority of states".

"Let's be real clear: This is not about Planned Parenthood and abortion because we already know that Planned Parenthood gets no funding for abortions in this country - pure and simple", Rep. Jackie Speier, D-Calif., said on the floor Thursday.

Back in December, the Department of Health and Human Services issued a rule that states can not deny federal Title X family planning grants to abortion providers like Planned Parenthood simply because they perform abortions.

President Barack Obama made the decision about Title X funding, the federal family-planning program introduced under President Richard Nixon, in the final days of his presidency. However, no federal funding goes toward paying for abortion procedures in the U.S. "Joni Ernst (R-IA) for leading this measure to restore states' freedom in choosing Title X providers", Christie stated.

Judge says Trump travel ban case can proceed in lower court
A Virginia federal judge on Monday blocked President Trump's executive order to ban seven predominantly Muslim countries . That restraining order was upheld last week by a three-judge panel from the Ninth Circuit.

The move comes as pro-life groups are reporting poor care and abuses at Planned Parenthood clinics nationwide, from affiliates using taxpayer funds for abortion-related services to many clinics not providing prenatal care to clinics setting monthly quotas for abortions or abortion referrals.

Republicans said Congress should overturn the rule to allow states the right to steer funds away from abortion providers, if they choose. House Joint Resolution 43 provides for congressional disapproval on the final rule submitted by Secretary of Health and Human Services relating to compliance with Title X requirements. He anxious that it would defund other women's health services, rather than abortion. According to Planned Parenthood Empire State Acts, the nonprofit organization educates and lobbies on behalf of women's health.

"This rule will strengthen access to essential services like cancer screenings and contraception for some of the most vulnerable patients in this country", Dr. Karen A. Scott, chief medical officer at the Department of Health and Human Services, said in a statement after the rule was approved past year.

Services including pregnancy tests, cancer and sexually transmitted disease screenings and contraceptive services are provided to low-income people at no cost or reduced cost.
